Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted by deer ticks. These are typically found in wooded areas and grassy areas. The CDC estimates that 300,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease in the U.S. each year. However, because diagnosing Lyme disease can be difficult, many people who have Lyme disease may be diagnosed with other similar conditions.
Early symptoms of Lyme disease include:
- Red expanding skin rash
- Severe headaches and neck stiffness
- Lightheadedness
- Flu-like symptoms
- Fainting, shortness of breath, heart palpitations or chest pain
- Shooting pains that may interfere with sleep
- Pain and swelling in large joints
Late symptoms of Lyme disease include:
- Fatigue
- Joint pain
- Twitching
- Muscle aches
- Memory loss
- Sleep impairment
- Heart related symptoms
- Gastrointestinal symptoms (Stomach/ Digestive)
- Psychiatric (e.g. Depression, Mood change, etc.)
- Neuropathy (Nerve pain, numbness, tingling)
