Trigger Point Injection (TPI)
This involves the doctor inserting a tiny needle into the trigger point (knot of the muscle that fails to relax). The injection contains a local anesthetic and/or an anti-inflammatory medication. For patients with allergies to these medications, a dry-needle technique may be used. The result of trigger Point Injection is the deactivation or "loosening" of the muscle knot, providing immediate and sustained pain relief in most cases.
TPI's work well in the neck, back, arms, legs and hips. TPI's also provide effective pain relief for fibromyalgia, tension headaches, torticollis and myofascial pain syndrome. The procedure takes 10 to 30 minutes depending on the number of areas treated. You may resume normal activities immediately after treatment.
